Research Guide

This webpage provides a portal and guide to the complete digitized Country files from the National Security Files for Eastern Europe, housed in the Texas Scholar Works repository, and unavailable elsewhere online.

The LBJ Presidential Library has over 45 million pages of historical documents, including a significant online collection open to researchers and educators. Here is a complete guide to all documents housed in the LBJ Library that are relevant to the USSR and Eastern Europe, most of which are not digitized.

How to use this collection:  To browse the whole collection by box, folder, document title, author, and issue date, go to this LINK. To search the entire collection by keywords with a date range, go to this LINK. Enter search terms in the search window and use the author, subject, and date range filters on the left toolbar. Click on the document title or thumbnail to access the document page, and then on the link directly below the thumbnail to download the document. See the individual country pages for general descriptions of the collections and folder-by-folder guides.

Citation Guide: To cite materials from the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library, you should clearly identify the item, its location within the library's archives, and the Library itself. Citations should include the type of document (e.g., letter, memo), sender and recipient, date, folder number, box number, collection title, and LBJ Presidential Library.

About This Site

The Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin Libraries has been working on this digitization project since 2014. Our curated digitized collection of Cold War archives includes the Country Files for Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania, Yugoslavia, and Albania from the National Security Files (NSF) collection from the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library's archival collections. We will continue adding new content, including the country files for Hungary, Bulgaria, and the USSR, which are coming soon. Contributors to the creation of this website and the digitized collection include Dr. Mary Neuburger (director of the project), Ian Goodale, Dr. Tetiana Klynina, Alayna Parlevleit, Nick Pierce, Eliza Fisher, Sarth Khare, Nilcole Marino, Mary Rader, Esmeralda Moscatelli and students from the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies program at UT Austin. Images used on the site are sourced from the LBJ Presidential Library's online photo archive, Wikimedia Commons, and other sources as noted. The background collages on the main page and the country pages are mostly from the English-language Communist-era glossy magazines produced in the region, now housed in the UT Libraries and Dr. Neuburger's private collection.
