HUNGARY
This page provides a guide to the digitized National Security Country Files on Hungary , housed in Texas ScholarWorks. The originals are located in the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas.

The bulk of this collection consists of documents related to the Hungarian Cardinal of the Catholic Church, József Mindszenty, who resided at the US Embassy from 1956 to 1971, and thus for the entirety of the LBJ administration. The collection includes a series of letters from Cardinal Mindszenty to President Johnson and indirect responses via the US Charge d'Affaires, on a wide range of matters. There are also documents discussing Mindszenty’s possible departure from the embassy on his own accord despite the risks, and the unsuccessful diplomatic efforts of the Vatican to secure his amnesty. There are also documents on US-Hungarian trade and relations and other matters.
