BULGARIA
This page provides a guide to the digitized National Security Country Files on Bulgaria housed in Texas Scholar Works. The originals are located in the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas.
The Bulgaria country files consist of only two folders. It is the smallest collection, except for Albania, in the Eastern European national security files. This is most likely due to the perception of Bulgaria as the most loyal Soviet satellite. The files in these folders cover a range of topics, including the 1963-1965 violent Bulgarian demonstrations outside the US Legation related to the Asen Georgiev spy case, and the US role in the Vietnam War. There are also materials on Todor Zhivkov’s planned trip to the US in 1967, as well as a discussion of the need for improved US-Bulgarian trade and diplomatic relations.
